The opening class of the 102nd Perthshire Music Festival set an energetic and uplifting tone for the day, as young voices from Perth’s primary schools gathered to perform before adjudicator Tara Leiper. The class, held at 9:30 am, featured the City Primary Schools Choir category for singers aged up to twelve.

The sole entry in the class came from the Craigclowan Concert Choir, conducted by Karol Fitzpatrick, who presented a thoughtfully contrasted programme of two well-known songs.

The choir began with “Flash, Bang, Wallop!” by David Heneker, delivering a lively and confident performance that immediately captured the spirit of the festival’s opening moments. The singers showed strong ensemble work and clear diction, bringing humour and theatrical flair to the song’s playful character. Their enthusiasm and rhythmic precision helped set a vibrant atmosphere for the morning session.

For their second piece, the choir turned to the lyrical “Hush-a-Bye Mountain” by the Sherman brothers. This provided a gentle contrast to the exuberance of the first work. The choir demonstrated careful phrasing and expressive tone, with a warm blend across the ensemble. The softer dynamics and calm mood of the piece allowed the young singers to showcase musical sensitivity as well as vocal control.

Adjudicator Tara Leiper commended the choir for their confident start to the festival day and for the musical contrast achieved between the two selections. Particular praise was given for the choir’s clear articulation and the supportive conducting of Karol Fitzpatrick, which enabled the singers to perform with assurance and musicality.

The Craigclowan Concert Choir was duly awarded The Millennium Trophy, donated by Mrs Jean Thomson, in recognition of their engaging and well-prepared performance.

The class provided a bright and encouraging opening to this year’s festival, highlighting the enthusiasm and musical promise of Perth’s young singers.
