An afternoon of outstanding young musical talent was captured on record at the 2026 Perform in Perth Festival, held in the Mission Hall of St Matthew’s Church on Friday 13 March. The event featured a vibrant programme of competitive piping and drumming, adjudicated by respected figures Allan Craig and Conner Pratt.

Proceedings began at 1:00 pm with Class 044, Bagpipes (Jig) for performers aged 15 to 17. A strong field of competitors from across Perthshire and beyond delivered confident and technically impressive performances. Pupils from Strathallan School were particularly well represented, performing a range of traditional pieces including selections associated with the renowned Glasgow City Police Pipers under Pipe Major Donald MacLeod MBE.

Competitors from Falkirk High School, Glenalmond College, Larbert High School and Blairgowrie High School added further variety to the programme, showcasing both traditional tunes and distinctive interpretations such as CorkhillThe Banjo BreakdownBrae Riach, and The Loch Ness Monster. The class demonstrated not only technical skill but also the continued strength of Scotland’s piping tradition among young performers.

At 2:30 pm, attention turned to percussion with Class 053, Tenor Drum (March). Performers from Strathallan School and Morrison’s Academy delivered disciplined and musical displays, highlighting precision, rhythm, and performance flair.

The afternoon concluded with Class 054, Tenor Drum (March, Strathspey and Reel), where competitors from Strathallan School presented lively and engaging performances across the contrasting styles required.

The recording of this event preserves a snapshot of emerging talent within Scotland’s traditional music scene and reflects the high standards encouraged by the Perform in Perth Festival.
