An inspiring afternoon of young musical talent took centre stage at St Leonard’s-in-the-Fields Church Hall, where a wide range of brass performances delighted audiences and adjudicator Katrina Marzella. The full event is now available to watch, offering a chance to experience the impressive standard of musicianship on display.

The afternoon opened with Level 1 euphonium, baritone and bass soloists performing Evening Shadows by T. Johnson. Brandon Hood and Henry Poole, both of Viewlands Primary School, delivered confident performances that set the tone for the day.

In the corresponding Level 1 trumpet, cornet and flugelhorn class, Luke Davies and Elsie Hunter—also representing Viewlands Primary—showcased strong early technique and musicality in the same piece.

As the programme progressed, performers took on more varied repertoire. In the Level 1 E-flat instrument class, Thomas Moffat and George Cunningham performed Russian Dance by Leslie Pearson with energy and precision.

Level 2 competitors raised the bar further. Benjamin Warren of Crieff High School and Richard Jeffress of Viewlands Primary impressed with Minuet in C, while a large and competitive trumpet class featured ten performers tackling Pigalleby Christopher Gunning. Standout performances came from Isabella Dallas (Kinross Primary), Max Colliss and Sophie Price (RDM Primary), and Murray Reid (Perth Academy), among others.

Musical Expression Takes Centre Stage

The horn class featured Evie Bell and Jessica Peebles, both from Viewlands Primary School, performing contrasting works by S. Watts, demonstrating developing expressive range.

Later, Level 2 euphonium competitors Lauchlan Campbell (Morrison’s Academy) and Eli Swift (Methven Primary School) delivered polished interpretations of Pigalle.

In the more advanced Level 3 category, Oscar Kula (Viewlands Primary) gave a confident solo performance of Variations on a Temperance Theme, while Nathan Olszewski impressed on trombone with a lively rendition of The Carnival of Venice.

The final classes of the afternoon highlighted some of the most accomplished performers. Erica Graham of Bertha Park delivered a stylish and characterful trumpet performance featuring Hey Look Me Over and Shostakovich’s Waltz. Harry Dow (Auchtergaven Primary School) matched this high standard in the euphonium category with the same programme.
